Will I Ever Outgrow My Acne?

What’s Acne and When Does It Start?

Acne is a skin condition most common in teenagers but is also common in adults caused by oil and dead skin cells clogging your pores. Whiteheads and blackheads are clogged pores without infection while pimples, pustules, nodules, and cysts are inflammatory types of acne. This type of acne can cause painful and red or pus-filled lumps in your skin.

Does Acne Go Away After Puberty?

Sometimes it goes away after puberty, but not always. There are differences and similarities between teenager acne and adult acne. Both types of acne are caused by a build-up of oil and dead skin cells with or without inflammation and can be triggered by hormonal changes. For most people acne starts during their teen years (91% of people have acne during their teen years). During puberty, your body goes through hormonal changes. With increase androgens, like testosterone, they also increase the size of oil-producing glands: so, more oil = more breakouts. However, when your hormones level out after puberty, your acne typically goes away. And your youthful skin replenishes more quickly than adult skin, and any marks left on your face could fade away faster.

Adults are less likely to develop acne but it is impossible to know how long adult acne will last. Women are more likely to experience acne than men with pregnancy and menstruation (hormonal changes) are common triggers. Acne in adults is more likely to occur on your chin and jawline. Because your adult skin is drier and slower to replenish skin cells, you have to stay on top of your skincare routine for acne. Though recovery is a bit slower, with the right products and plan in place, there’s no reason you can’t achieve and maintain soft, clean-feeling skin all year round.

Once a breakout is back under control, you can still be left with scars, discolored patches of skin known as hypopigmentation and hyperpigmentation. It is important to remember is to not pick at your acne while it’s active because it plays a huge role in how your skin looks after the outbreak has subsided.
